Chock Time is made by Rugburn Labs LLC, a Virginia limited liability company ("we", "us"). You can reach us at support@chocktime.app. We are not affiliated with the FAA or the Department of Defense.
Chock Time is an app for keeping your own pilot logbook and for asking a flight instructor to sign entries. It is a recordkeeping tool, not an authority: we do not verify your flight time, certify your entries, determine your eligibility for a certificate or rating, or give legal or aeronautical advice.
No FAA approval. The FAA does not approve, certify, or endorse pilot logbooks — paper or electronic. 14 CFR 61.51(a) requires you to document and record the training and experience it lists "in a manner acceptable to the Administrator", and 61.51(b) sets out what each entry must contain; neither calls for an approved product. We cannot promise that any particular examiner, employer, or inspector will accept a given record, and we will never describe Chock Time as FAA-approved, FAA-certified, or official.
You accept these Terms by ticking the acceptance box when you create an account, and again in the app the first time you open it after we publish a new version. Each acceptance is recorded in your own audit log together with the version and a SHA-256 fingerprint of the exact text you accepted. If you do not accept them, do not create an account and do not keep using Chock Time. Our Privacy Policy is part of these Terms.
You need an account. You sign in with your e-mail address and your passphrase — the same passphrase that unlocks your logbook — and you can add a passkey, which both signs you in and unlocks the app on that device: we store its public key, and its secret half never leaves your device or your password manager. Keep your passphrase, recovery code and passkey to yourself; you are responsible for what happens under your account.
Pilots aged 13 to 17. The FAA lets a student pilot solo at 16 (14 in a glider or balloon) and instructors endorse minors, so we do not shut under-18s out. If you are under 18, you may use Chock Time only if a parent or legal guardian reviews these Terms and the Privacy Policy and accepts them in the app; your account stays inactive until that consent is recorded. Your guardian enters into these Terms with us both on your behalf and in their own name, and is responsible with you for your compliance with them. Your guardian can withdraw consent at any time by writing to support@chocktime.app — which closes the account, after we offer an export — and can receive notice of material changes and exercise your privacy rights. Your guardian cannot read your logbook: it is encrypted so that it can only be decrypted on your own devices (section 6) and we have no way to give anyone else access. Your guardian also cannot sign entries or act as the pilot who certifies them — under 14 CFR 61.51 that is you alone (sections 5 and 7). An under-18 pilot can link with another account, whoever sends the invite, only after a parent or guardian approves that link. When you turn 18 we ask you to re-accept these Terms in your own name. After that, you or your guardian can have the guardian's name and e-mail address removed by writing to support@chocktime.app; we keep the consent event itself — its date and the document versions consented to — as evidence that the consent was valid while it was required.
Nobody under 13. We do not knowingly allow accounts for children under 13. If we learn of one, we close it and delete the data.
Instructors. An instructor account is for signing other pilots' entries. You must be at least 18 (14 CFR 61.183(a)) and the person named on the certificate you enter.
You alone certify your logbook. When you sign an entry, you — not Chock Time — make the statement, and you are responsible for the accuracy, completeness, and legality of every entry, conversion, signature, and export.
Under 14 CFR 3.403 a fraudulent or intentionally false statement, or the knowing omission of a material fact, in a record kept to show compliance can cost you your certificate. Under 14 CFR 3.405 a **material incorrect statement or omission can be grounds for FAA action even if the error was unintentional.** Check your entries.
Anything Chock Time derives for you — military-to-civilian conversions, totals, currency, progress toward a rating — is a calculation from what you entered, using rules you chose. It is not an FAA determination and not an eligibility check. Your original records control. Review the math before you sign.
Your logbook is encrypted on your device before it reaches us. We cannot read it — not unless we also obtained the half of an unlock key that is kept only on your own device (below). We hold only encrypted data plus the structural information described in the Privacy Policy.
Your encryption key is protected by your passphrase, a recovery code shown once at setup, and optionally a passkey. We never receive your recovery code, your passkey, or your encryption key. When you sign in, your device sends a value computed from your passphrase by a one-way function; we store only a further hash of that value. It cannot decrypt your logbook, and it cannot practically be turned back into your passphrase — but it is derived from it, which is why a long, unique passphrase matters.
If your password manager cannot hold a passkey secret. Some managers can only prove who you are; they cannot store a secret we could use as a key. If you enable passkey unlock anyway, your device splits that unlock key in two: half stays on that device and is never sent anywhere, and we hold the other half — a random number that opens nothing on its own. Unlocking this way needs an internet connection and a fresh check of your passkey; offline, use your passphrase. We cannot use our half unless we also obtain the half kept only on your device.
If you lose both your passphrase and your recovery code, your logbook is gone permanently. We cannot reset it, recover it, or read it. Save your recovery code somewhere you will still have it in ten years.
Asking an instructor with a Chock Time account to sign an entry shares that entry's details with them: date, aircraft, dual time, lesson description, and your name. Anyone who holds the signing link and has a Chock Time account can open the request and see those details, and the first person to sign it is the one who signs — so send the link only to your instructor. The request stops being viewable once it is signed, cancelled, or expires (24 hours by QR code, 7 days by link).
The instructor's signature, name, certificate number, and certificate date are sealed into your logbook entry — it is your record under 14 CFR 61.51 — and the instructor also keeps their own copy, which survives even if you later erase your account. Our server keeps a receipt of the signing event (cryptographic hashes and the passkey assertion, never the entry's contents).
Chock Time does not verify anyone's identity or certificate. A signature shows that a separate Chock Time account in that name signed, confirmed with that account's passkey. Save it only if it is really your instructor.
Signing your own training, or letting anyone other than the instructor who gave it sign it, is a false entry in a record the FAA can inspect (14 CFR 3.403).
Signing on your phone instead. A second, weaker path stays available: your instructor types their name and certificate number and signs on your own unlocked device, as they would in a paper logbook. **Chock Time cannot confirm who actually signed that way** — anyone holding your unlocked phone can type anything. Those entries are marked D, "Signed on the pilot's device," in the app and on every export, as are entries signed before instructor accounts existed and any signature that later fails verification.
If you sign as an instructor: the signature is your own act and its accuracy is yours; do not share your account or passkey; Chock Time is not your 14 CFR 61.189 recordkeeping system; erasing your account deletes your copies.
You can export your logbook at any time, and export will not be put behind a paywall — not now, and not under any paid plan we may add later. You can erase your account from inside the app. Erasure is scheduled, not immediate: we destroy your keys 7 days after you ask, and until then you can cancel from any device you are signed in on, with your logbook readable the whole time. Export a copy first: once the window runs, erasing destroys your encryption keys — including any half-key we hold — and the logbook cannot be brought back, including the records the FAA may ask to see under 14 CFR 61.51(i).
What erasing does, and what it leaves. When the window runs, it destroys every copy of your encryption key — every wrapped copy we store and any half-key we hold — so your logbook becomes permanently unreadable to you and to us; it scrubs your name, date of birth, certificate numbers, guardian details, preferences, and any issue reports you sent; and it deletes your sign-in — your e-mail address and every session. The Privacy Policy explains exactly what survives.
Do not: falsify records; submit someone else's records without authority; sign as someone you are not; share an account or signing passkey; attack or circumvent the security of the service; or put classified or export-controlled material (22 CFR Parts 120–130; 15 CFR Parts 730–774) into a bug report or screenshot.
Your logbook is yours. You give us only the permission needed to store, sync, and back up the encrypted data so the service works — no ownership, no other use. You confirm you have the right to enter the records you enter, including military records. We do not verify, vet, or review the records you import, including DoD or other military flight records: we cannot read them, and it is your responsibility to confirm that anything you upload is yours to hold and is not classified or export-controlled (22 CFR Parts 120–130; 15 CFR Parts 730–774).
We may change, suspend, or discontinue features, and may close an account that breaks section 9. If we shut Chock Time down entirely, we will give notice and a window to export your data.
Chock Time is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, availability, and non-infringement. Where a state does not allow these exclusions, they do not apply to you.
To the maximum extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost data, hours, certificates, or employment. Our total liability for any claim is limited to the greater of what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim and US$100. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law, including for fraud or gross negligence.
You will cover our reasonable losses arising from records you enter or certify, your regulatory non-compliance, or your breach of these Terms.
We will post an updated version here with a new effective date and give in-app notice of material changes before they take effect. When a new version takes effect we ask you to accept it in the app. If you do not want to accept it, export your logbook and erase your account.
These Terms are governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules. Write to support@chocktime.app first — most things are fixable that way. Disputes we cannot settle informally go to the state or federal courts located in Virginia, and we each consent to their jurisdiction. Nothing here removes your right to complain to a regulator or to bring a small-claims action.
These Terms are between you and Rugburn Labs LLC only, not with Apple or Google. Apple and Google are not responsible for Chock Time or its content, have no obligation to provide maintenance or support for it, and are not responsible for any claim that it fails to conform to a warranty, for product liability, or for any third-party intellectual-property claim — those are ours to handle, subject to sections 12 and 13. If the app fails to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple and Apple will refund the purchase price, if any; that is Apple's entire warranty obligation. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms and may enforce them against you. The store's own end-user terms also apply to the copy you downloaded.
